For People in Need Around the World

During the past year, the WELS Committee on Relief has helped individuals all over the world recover from disasters of nature, personal hardships, and medical needs. We continued aid for those affected by the tsunami in Thailand in January 2005. We also sent aid to earthquake victims in Indonesia and helped other relief agencies establish water treatment plants in that country.

Our largest effort in 2005-2006, however, was providing relief for those affected by the hurricanes in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The WELS Committee on Relief has distributed more than $1.5 million for hurricane relief and worked with WELS Kingdom Workers to provide hundreds of volunteers for rebuilding efforts. Below we have a heartfelt thank-you from Crown of Life Lutheran Church in New Orleans, La:

We have seen the mighty hand of God among us, and it is marvelous in our eyes. Last year a hurricane came along and destroyed our church and scattered our members across the country. It was over. But God reached down with his mighty hand and touched us. He healed our church. He did it the way he apparently likes to do things - through his people. And you, his people, responded in overwhelming fashion. Through you, your gifts, your time, and your prayers, our fellowship hall, parsonage, and chapel have been rebuilt, and many of our members have been helped to come home. You have been the hand of God among us. We have seen it, and it is marvelous in our eyes. For that we thank you. Pastor David Sternhagen
